UPDATE: Given the current situation, the committee feel it would be best to postpone the meeting due to take place this Thursday, 6th January, until Thursday 20th January, updated details below.
A planning group is now forming to organise events in Dennington to mark the Queen’s 70 years on the throne. We would like to set up an open meeting to get people’s views on how we should be celebrating this momentous event. AT THE MOMENT WE HAVE BOOKED THE VILLAGE HALL FOR 6.30PM ON THURSDAY 20TH JANUARY AND INVITE YOU TO ATTEND, but obviously we will have to consider other options If the Covid threat is too severe for us to meet in person on that day.
The Jubilee weekend is 3rd-5th June, and it is suggested that the village come together for a special day of celebration on Sunday, 5th June. Things that have been discussed so far include:
- Church service of Thanksgiving
- Bellringing
- Picnic on the sports field – either lunch or tea
- Fun games on the sports field eg egg throwing, fancy dress obstacle race, golf putting etc.
- Croquet match
- Village trail to find home-made crowns outside 70 houses
- Photomontage of houses in the village aged 70+ (with occupants)
- Exhibition of old Dennington photos in village hall
- People’s memories of meeting the Queen
- Choral performance
- Jubilee mugs, fireworks, beacon, flagpoles
We have already applied for a commemorative oak tree for the village which will arrive in February, and a site for that will need to be agreed before it can be planted!
In addition to views on the above we would welcome people joining the planning committee and/or helping to organise any of these activities. Please put the meeting on the 6th in your diary now and we will confirm this early in the New Year.
